Nineteen

Drin stood on the flat landing area where he’d originally landed at the hideaway. In front of him were twenty Skree, standing in lines of five, orderly as if they were Templars in training. The group had just completed Yezuah’s prayer, the first part of the morning, and Drin had led them in a more specific prayer for safety and peace. Now they followed his lead in stretches.

Sao-rin had asked Drin for advice on turning some of his men into a fighting force so they could be more effective against the Sekarans. It would take time, and perhaps more insight than Drin could offer. He had never been a teacher or instructor, but only a soldier as they were now.

One thing they didn’t need was strength conditioning. Their work as slaves in agriculture or other capacities made them some of the strongest people Drin had seen in the galaxy without nanite assistance. Because many were used to walking in the hot sands, they had several other qualities that could be honed into an excellent fighting force, as well. Their stamina was incredible, as was their ability to work together.

What they needed were weapons and tactics training. Drin could provide some of that, but most of what he did at this point was instinct and reflex. His instructors had drilled fighting into his very being. He rarely took the time to think about the details of what he did.

It would be different with them, as well. They didn’t have nanite assistance. They had to fight as regular ground units. Given their relative stamina, and that this was their homeland, Drin wanted them to be more like a light infantry unit than his Templars were. More mobile, flexible. At the same time, they needed the lockstep discipline. They couldn’t be forced to scatter in fear as the slaves had been in the past. Watching their eyes, Drin saw clearly that he brought them a confidence they didn’t have before.

“Each of you take a sparring partner for hand-to-hand training. Let’s spread out a good distance and give some room. We’re going to run through drills that will help you react to specific enemy attacks,” Drin said.

The Skree followed his orders and spread out. Drin paced through them until he came to the head of the group. He motioned for Sao-rin, who had been watching from the shade of a rock overhang, to join him. The Skree heir stepped forward and moved to the position Drin told him. “We’re going to work on someone charging from the front, what to look for, and how to react. Gaining advantage in confrontations is all about keeping your own balance and forcing your opponent off theirs. Here’s what you look for…”

Drin went through several scenarios over the next hour, the Skree following along with his slow-motion demonstrations and then applying them against their partners. They were eager and worked hard in the morning sun before it became too hot to do too many physical exercises in the afternoon.
